Abstract

El siglo XIX significa para Cuba un período de surgimiento y consolidación en el terreno de la narrativa.1 No solamente cristaliza el proceso de formación identitario del pueblo cubano, sino que surgen expresiones culturales de notable calidad estética que identifican a la nación como una entidad autóctona, diferente de la colonia española. La novela fue una de esas expresiones que evoluciona durante el XIX hasta alcanzar notables índices de calidad y consolidarse como una de las más importantes de la región. Precisamente en Cecilia Valdés o la Loma del Ángel (1882) de Cirilo Villaverde (1812-1894), el crítico Roberto González Echeverría encuentra “la mejor novela hispanoamericana del siglo XIX, y una de las grandes de la tradición occidental” (269). La tardía incorporación de Cuba y Puerto Rico en 1898 al catálogo de territorios libres del control colonial español condiciona un panorama distinto y hasta cierto punto único, particularmente en lo que concierne a una consolidación de lo narrativo.2 A este respecto, Denia García Ronda asevera que “la narrativa en cuanto categoría literaria surge en Cuba tardíamente, ya en el siglo XIX” (37). Baste decir que para 1882, año en el que se publica Cecilia Valdés, la mayor parte de las grandes novelas latinoamericanas como Soledad (1847), Amalia (1851) y María (1867) ya contaban con una amplia difusión. El caso cubano constituye, por tanto, un fenómeno cuya trayectoria, si bien solo puede explicarse satisfactoriamente a partir de su inserción en la historia intelectual regional, posee claramente una dinámica propia directora de su historia evolutiva.
