Forward planning for aggregate production

Authors: Ryan, Liam;

Forward planning for aggregate production

Abstract

This project was commissioned with the aim of modernising the production planning systems at CRMC through the introduction of a numerical based tool capable of planning production ahead of time. Project Aim This project consisted of three major goals: 1. Develop an understanding of quarry production systems 2. Develop a proof of concept production planning tool 3. Validate the tool by assisting the Aggregates division in production planning Project Outcome This project utilised aspects of agile development and human centred design in order to design and build a numerical model capable of planning the day to day operations of CRMC up to four weeks out. This tool has been built on Microsoft Excel in order to comply with the requests of CRMC which were: - The software used must free, or close to. - The tool must be usable by other members of staff. - The tool must be modular and able to adapt to change. - The tool must work in conjunction with existing CRMC systems. The methodology of agile design enabled this tool to be built throughout the project as more information and experience was gained. This tool went through three major versions and countless modular iterations with regular input from the management team at CRMC to make sure the finished tool was aligned to their objectives.
