Abstract

Os problemas inerentes à função respiratória são comuns na Paralisia Cerebral, sendo a frequência daqueles proporcional ao grau de severidade da Paralisia Cerebral. A hipotonia fisiológica da musculatura faríngea que ocorre durante o sono é agravada na Paralisia Cerebral pela fraqueza muscular própria desta situação. Esta fraqueza pode ainda ser exacerbada pelos sedativos que, com frequência, são administrados pelos problemas do ritmo do sono. Estes condicionantes associados à dificuldade de mobilidade da criança durante o sono, vão facilitar a obstrução das vias aéreas superiores e consequente ocorrência de infecções respiratórias. O refluxo gastroesofágico, o estado de nutrição, a higiene dentária, a sialorreia, a escoliose são factores que podem influenciar a frequência e gravidade dos problemas respiratórios. A correcta abordagem desta problemática passa por medidas de prevenção que consistem essencialmente na manutenção dum bom estado de nutrição, duma boa higiene dentária e duma postura vertebral tão adequada quanto possível. O tratamento visa a correcção do refluxo gastroesofágico e a desobstrução das vias aéreas, esta através de cinesterapia e terapêutica médica, métodos cirúrgicos ou apoio ventilatório.
