Abstract

Der Energie- und Rohstoffbedarf der modernen Gesellschaft verursacht in zunehmendem Maße gravierende Eingriffe in das natürliche Ökosystem. Immer häufiger führen infrastrukturelle Großvorhaben wie die Anlage von Staudämmen zu weitreichenden negativen ökologischen und sozialen Folgen. Nach Schätzungen der World Commission on Dams wurden weltweit zwischen 40 und 80 Millionen Menschen aufgrund von Staudammvorhaben umgesiedelt und ihrer Lebensgrundlage in Fischfang und Ackerbau beraubt. Im Einzelfall wie beispielsweise beim Drei-Schluchten-Projekt am Yangtzefluss in China sind von den Umsiedlungsmaßnahmen über eine Million Menschen betroffen. Auf zwischenstaatlicher Ebene führen Staudämme nicht selten zu Konflikten, wenn sich durch sie die Wasserversorgung der Unterlieger durch die Oberlieger spürbar eingeschränkt. Prominentes Beispiel sind die anhaltenden Spannungen am Euphrat um das türkische Süd-Anatolien Projekt. Durch den Bau des Atatürkstaudamms sind die Unterlieger Irak und Syrien hinsichtlich ihrer Wasserzufuhr in eine empfindliche Abhängigkeit von der Türkei geraten.

In den Halleschen Diskussionsbeiträgen zur Wirtschafts- und Sozialgeographie werden wirtschafts- und sozialwissenschaftliche Forschungsergebnisse aus dem Institut für Geographie der Universität Halle-Wittenberg veröffentlicht.
