Role of suberin for defense responses in potato

Abstract

Suberin is a heteropolymer composed of polyaliphatic linked with polyphenolic components, presumed to be important for wound healing from plants. A number of studies have shown plants lacking suberin, but few have investigated their interactions with pathogens and wounding. Wounding of leaves and tubers from potato plants with deficiency in suberin deposition resulted in extensive tissue browning, correlating with an accumulation of hydroxycinnamic acid amides in the wounded tissue of leaves. Further, the expression of the Arabidopsis transcription factor MYB39 in wild type potato plants resulted in enhanced suberin formation around wound sites in leaves and these plants are thus available for further studies. This work presents functional evidence that suberin plays a pivotal role in wound healing of both leaves and tubers of potato.
