Die Zukunftsfähigkeit der Anthropogeographie: Die Postmoderne als metatheoretisches Paradigma?

Abstract

This paper starts with the three central themes of geography as defined by Peter Haggett: locational approach, region/regionalisation, and man-environment relations. lt tries to make geographical approaches and their epistemological base contemporary thus attempting to provide new future perspectives of human geography. With the changes from premodernity to modernity and postmodernity, theoretical and epistemological bases are changing and therefore so is Human Geography. Postmodernity breaks with the idea that progress and rationality are due to science. Thus the basic aim ofpostmodern critique is the perception and acknowledgement of the Other. This leads to pluralism in academic discourse; Feminism, postcolonialism and multiculturalism are postmodern developments which all have close links to geography. lt becomes clear through a careful examination of postmodern approaches that these are starting points for geographical concepts. Even Haggett's three traditional themes show connections with postmodern thought. However it is only through an intensive revision and discussion of this thought that human geography will be prepared for the struggle with scientificapproaches and thus be able to develop concepts which have a promising future.
