The flawed pearl: Neo-Baroque and the mundane

The flawed pearl: Neo-Baroque and the mundane

Abstract

If one tries to retrace the essence of the Baroque, they most likely will stumble upon the notions of excess, exuberance, flamboyant formal expression, but also of dissonance, disrespect of tradition, and non-necessity. All of the above are properties that well describe the most interesting part of computational design, a discipline in constant pursuit of complexity, non-linearity, and new paradigms of formal expression. This is the reason neo-Baroque is quickly emerging as a core tendency within the discipline, with distinct aesthetics and problematic. By signaling the end of the Digital Revolution, NEGROPONTE is landing the digital into the realm of the mundane, welcoming us to the Postdigital world. The Digital is the new banal, ever-present, if only through Hegelian negation. In this sense, the post-digital is defined as a new paradigm to understand and experience the digital (eg. AGAMBEN, 1993). The paper proposes that this paradigm shift has immense emancipatory potential for experimental digital design. By following the evolution of key concepts and technologies of the modern world and their transcription into the digital era, it will attempt to retrace the convergence between the Neobaroque and the Postdigital. This will lay the ground to study the aesthetic, material, and political implementations of a postdigital neobaroque design identity.
