Tactical urbanism als urbane Assemblage

Tactical urbanism as an urban assemblage
Authors: Mathes, Stephan Elias;

Tactical urbanism als urbane Assemblage

Abstract

This thesis examines Tactical Urbanism through the case of Gürtelfrische WEST, a politically initiated tactical–temporary intervention implemented in summer 2020 along Vienna’s Neubaugürtel. The project received considerable political and media attention, involved a heterogeneous constellation of actors, and built on several modular precursor initiatives with direct connections to the site. Drawing on social-scientific theories of space and assemblage thinking, the thesis analyses the emergence of the intervention as a situational and relational configuration of spatial, political, organisational, and material elements. The conditions enabling the project stem from the historically shaped and evolving urban context, the political dynamics of the 2020 election year, and the re-assemblage of earlier tactical projects. Operationally, the intervention was marked by situational pragmatism, including temporary rule-bending, flexible reallocations of responsibilities, and the use of informal practices often noted in the TU literature. The findings support core assumptions regarding openness, situatedness, and the role of informal logics in tactical–temporary urbanism.
