Sense of place - sense of taste

Abstract

This thesis investigates the significance of the preparation and consumption of traditional Romanian dishes among Romanian immigrants living in Austria. It asks whether and how cooking and eating customs change in the context of migration and what this means for the formation of identity. The aim of this research is to clarify the ways in which traditional Romanian cooking and eating (re)produce among the subjects a feeling of belonging to their home culture. The methodology comprises interviews, participatory observation, and informal conversations. The work illuminates the sociocultural factors that influence identification with Romanian cuisine. These include communal festivals as these offer occasions for the preparation and consumption of meals. Festivals and celebrations serve not just to enhance a feeling of community but also to strengthen cultural identity. Another factor is social networks within the Romanian community in Austria. Cooking and eating together can serve to reinforce these social bonds and to sustain the sense of belonging to the home country. I argue that on the basis of the integration process the following stages or degrees of integration emerge into view: the commuter migrant, the long-term resident, the academic, and the teenager. The results of this empirical investigation show that commuter migrants do not lose their gastronomic customs. One academic and one long-term resident have been maintaining their contacts with the Romanian community through political and religious channels. They eat Romanian food in their Romanian-Orthodox social setting, suggesting that they “actively work for” their sense of belonging and their identity. The case of the resident academics demonstrates how closely connected integration is with education and with professional success. And the sense of an “identity dilemma,” i.e., a feeling of being torn between two cultures, is especially illuminated in the work. The teenager, meanwhile, maintains almost no connection to her culture and country of origin. This study additionally elaborates how the preparation and consumption of traditional cuisine can be viewed as a means of strengthening cultural identity and promoting social bonds within the Romanian community in Austria.
