Abstract

Amid a growing wave of anti-gender policies, movements and parties across Europe, Spain stands out as an exception, continuing to advance women’s rights and equality policies even as other countries experience regression. This thesis explores how Spain has maintained such resilience by analyzing how gender equality has been discursively constructed and sustained from the post-Franco democratic transition to the present time. Drawing on van Dijk’s theory of context models, it examines political speeches, feminist manifestos, and media across two key periods: 1975-1995 and 2019-2022. The findings show that gender equality in Spain became closely tied to national identity and democratic values, gaining institutional support and widespread legitimacy. Although recent challenges from far-right actors like the party VOX signal ongoing tensions, the long-standing discourse around gender justice remains influential. The study highlights how the strategic reinforcement of pro-equality narratives has helped Spain resist the broader European anti-gender backlash.
