Abstract

Exkursionen mit Schulklassen in eine KZ-Gedenkstätte gehören häufig zum Standardprogramm, wenn das Thema des Nationalsozialismus im Unterricht behandelt wird. Damit die Lernziele der Gedenkstättenpädagogik allerdings erreicht werden können, reicht der Besuch der Gedenkstätte nicht aus, sondern es sind didaktische und organisatorische Bemühungen der Lehrpersonen erforderlich. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, zu untersuchen, wie diese Besuche vor- und nachbereitet werden müssen, um die gewünschten Ergebnisse zu erreichen, und welche Wirkung ein Besuch der Gedenkstätte Mauthausen auf Schüler:innen und deren Geschichtsbewusstsein hat. Zur Beantwortung dieser Fragen wurden Lehrpersonen mittels Interviews und Schüler:innen mit zwei Fragebögen befragt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass eine ausführliche Vor- und Nachbereitung erforderlich ist, damit die Schüler:innen eine Wissensbasis entwickeln, bei der sie beim Besuch anknüpfen können und um die Inhalte danach nachhaltig sichern zu können. Die Schüler:innen erreichen durch den Besuch oft eine deutlichere Vorstellung der Thematik. Die Auswirkungen auf das Geschichtsbewusstsein, die durch die Befragungen beobachtet werden konnten, waren jedoch gering.

Excursions to concentration camp memorials are often a fixed component when the topic of National Socialism is taught in school. However, the visit of the memorial site is not sufficient to meet the respective learning objectives. Didactical and organizational considerations are required of the teacher. The aim of this paper is to investigate how these excursions need to be prepared and debriefed so that the intended results can be achieved, and how they affect students’ historical consciousness. To answer these questions, teachers were interviewed, and students received questionnaires. The results show that preparation and debriefing is necessary that the students can build a knowledge base which helps them engage with the content of the tour and save it substantially. Through the excursions, the students were able to reach a deeper understanding of the topic. The effect on their historical consciousness, however, was rather minimal.
