High-dimensional temporal entanglement for quantum key distribution

Abstract

This Master’s thesis presents the experimental realisation of a novel Quantum Key Distribution protocol adapted to high loss and noise situations. To this end, an extremely bright down-conversion photon source, producing high-dimensional entanglement in the time degree of freedom, was constructed and characterised. The high-dimensional entanglement of the generated photons was certified by a Fidelity witness up to dimension k = 4. Using a local setup, the feasibility of the protocol was successfully demonstrated by distilling positive asymptotic key rates for two out of three different loss scenarios. Finally, preparations for an upcoming realisation of the Quantum Key Distribution protocol over a noisy, metropolitan free-space link were conducted.
