Missed nursing care

Authors: Ziegler, Robert;

Missed nursing care

Abstract

Background: Missed nursing care refers to necessary nursing aspects of patient care that are not fully provided, delayed or omitted. This constitutes an error of omission. This phenomenon can occur in all settings. Missed nursing care can affect the quality of care and patient safety. In recent years, quantitative surveys have been conducted in Austria among fully trained nursing staff in hospitals. However, in Austria there are currently no qualitative studies examining the experiences of nursing students regarding missed nursing care. Method: To close the existing gap, ten problem-centred interviews were conducted, transcribed and analysed using the qualitatively structured content analysis method according to Kuckartz and Rädiker (2022). The interviews aimed to capture students' experiences of missed nursing care in their internships. Since no specific model for students has yet been developed for the young concept of missed nursing care, this master's thesis is embedded in the existing literature. Results: Students reported physical, emotional and social challenges as a result of missed nursing care. They often felt overwhelmed and left alone. Reasons for missed nursing care included a lack of time and staff, as well as a lack of support from experienced nursing staff. Conclusions: Dealing with missed nursing care can be problematic for students because they lack the experience to deal with it. Due to the lack of a model for students to deal with missed nursing care, further research and the development of a targeted model would be required. Key words: Missed nursing care, acute care, hospital, patient safety
