The Canary Islands and their identity
Authors: Reichhard, Klara;

Las islas Canarias y su identidad

Abstract

This work attempts to explore the identity of the Canary Islands and its inhabitants, which has evolved over the centuries due to historical, social and geographical characteristics. The development of the Canarian identity is analysed through the combination of African, European and Latin American elements, as well as the Guanche influence, migratory flows, the geographical area, Spanish colonialism and current politics. The richness and plurality of cultures in these islands are reflected in many disciplines, such as language, music, festivities, literature and their particular gastronomy. Likewise, this work investigates the challenges that arise today, such as the effects of globalisation and tourism. The results show that the mixture of all these particular features creates a unique Canarian identity that is transforming over time. In short, this analysis helps to understand the dynamics of identity in archipelagos and in a border context.
