
Die vorliegende Arbeit behandelt die briefliche Kommunikation der altassyrischen Händler in ihrer vielfältigen Ausgestaltung anhand corpusbasierter, gemischt qualitativer und quantitativer Methoden. Zunächst ist die Materialität der Briefe und deren Umschläge Thema: Wie wurden Briefe versendet und empfangen? Wie und warum wurden sie archiviert? Die emische altassyrische Terminologie rund um Briefkorrespondenz wird hier eingeschoben. Den Blick auf den Brief als Text gerichtet folgt zunächst eine Beschreibung des Formulars. Somit soll ein guter epistolographischer Kontext herausgearbeitet werden, um eine rhetorische Untersuchung der Händlerbriefe anhand kultureller Stichwörter, stehender Wendungen sowie non-verbaler Mittel nach ihrer quantitativen Relevanz anzuschließen. Eine Einordnung der Briefkorrespondenz in das sozio-ökonomische Umfeld des altassyrischen Fernhandels schließt die Arbeit ab.
The present thesis represents a corpus-based approach to the letter correspondence of Old Assyrian long-distance traders utilising mixed qualitative and quantitative methods. The study begins with a synopsis of the material aspects of letters and envelopes, their sending and receiving, as well as their modes and reasons for archiving. An overview of the emic Old Assyrian terminology regarding letter correspondence follows. We discuss the textual form of the letters, before delving into the contents. Building on this contextualisation of correspondence, we elaborate on rhetoric as persuasion as encountered in the letters. Cultural keys, stock phrases and non-verbal devices are the main subjects of discussion. Relative quantification of rhetorical elements enables an analysis of their social relevancy. We conclude with a socio-economic contextualisation of letter correspondence.
