Does the consumption of feminist pornography lead to less dehumanization of men and women than the consumption of mainstream pornography?

Abstract

The availability of pornography has increased in recent years, becoming the most popular source for sexual content used by young people nowadays. While there is plenty of speculation about its effects, empirical investigation about how pornographic content influences our lives and particularly our perception of the other gender is of high relevance. In the past years, pro- versus anti-pornography debates around the concepts of sexual objectification and dehumanization have been positioned, arguing that pornography, especially content created for the mass market, results in sexually objectifying and dehumanizing behavior towards women. However, a recent development in the pornography industry- called feminist pornography- aims for a realistic portrayal of pleasure and self-determined sexuality of both, women and men. Therefore, the present comparative study examines whether the consumption of feminist pornography leads to less dehumanization of men and women than the consumption of mainstream pornography. Results suggest that there is no significant difference between the participants watching feminist pornography and the participants watching pornography after the intervention with regard to dehumanization. For future research on this topic a bigger and more diverse sample size and a longer time of intervention might be implications in order to show a significant interaction effect regarding dehumanization.
