Noblesse oblige?

Abstract

The army of house Habsburg in the 18th century still has been part of the Holy Roman Empire. According to that, it wasn’t yet a pure “Austrian” army. The soldiers came from different regions of Europe and warfare in this century contained multiple challenges for the military command. Key elements, to overcome these challenges, were the officers, which showed a certain overlap with European nobility. This Thesis is intended, to focus on the question, how nobility fit into the military structures, specifically into the officer-corps of the Austrian infantry, in the middle of the century, more specifically in the transition period from Charles VI to Mary-Therese, from which regions and noble classes they originated and how they fit into the society and also into the military of the empire. To this end, statistic cognitions, gained from specimen lists, shall be compared to the current state of research about military- and noble-history and from that an analysis about nobility in the Austrian officer-corps shall be compiled.
