Die Wachverbände des KL Dachau

The guard units of the Dachau concentration camp
Authors: Heindl, Martin;

Die Wachverbände des KL Dachau

Abstract

The Dachau concentration camp was the first official camp set up by the Nazi regime. As such, it served as a model not only in terms of its structure and camp management, but especially in terms of the training of its guard units, which were soon provided by the SS. Theodor Eicke, as camp commander and later inspector of the concentration camps, pursued ambitious plans with his camp SS, which in his opinion should represent an elite within the Schutzstaffel. This was reflected not least in the training and indoctrination of the men stationed in Dachau, who were to become models for the entire camp SS. This paper examines the history of the Concentration Camp Dachau and the SS units stationed there. The fundamental thesis was that there was a connection between the strict selection and indoctrination of the camp SS and the production of Nazi perpetrators. The Nazi criminals would only have been able to carry out their deeds through training according to the Dachau model. To this end, this work first presents the development of NS perpetrator research and then, in addition an outline of the history of the Dachau Concentration Camp, deals in particular with the content and methodology of the training and selection of the camp SS. Afterwards, exemplary biographies of the SS members stationed in Dachau will be examined for similarities, provided that their CVs were tangible. Finally, an overview is given of current theories concerning the mentality and psyche of National Socialist perpetrators.
