Abstract

Home-sharing for seniors is a new and conceptionally diverse area of research for the sociol-ogy of health. Because of demographic and societal change alternative forms of housing have increased in relevance for matters of long-term care. Social networks are especially important in old age, as they provide resources of support in the face of health challenges. Moreover, social relations contribute to well-being and social inclusion in old age, as several studies show. Therefore this master thesis’s research program is the overarching question about the meaning of social relations for health-related quality of life in shared-homes for seniors. Dimensions of the way social relations among cohabitants contribute to health-related quality of life are taken into focus. In doing so a structuring framework is analyzed alongside a comparison of support from classic informal relations and support from cohabitants and professional caregivers. To this end 14 qualitative in-part-structured interviews were conducted and combined with an ego-centric network map of the Convoy-Model. Qualitative System Analysis provides the methodolocial framework for the ensuing data analysis. The results show multifaceted meanings of multifunctional relations. Relations to family members and friends continue to be highly relevant for support of health-related quality of life. Relations among cohabitants and between cohabitants and professional caregivers are characterized by a wide spectrum, from a felt lack of a relation to feelings of great emotional intimacy. A lack of relations to family and friends leads to a tighter integration of cohabitants and professional caregivers into the social network. Such relations increase in subjective sig-nificance for health-related quality of life. Community-embeddedness and close proximity of other shared homes provide a structure of opportunities for further closer relations, which are perceived as important for health-related quality of live.
