Nachhaltige Stadtentwicklung : eine vergleichende Fallstudie zu Hongkong und Singapur

Sustainable urban development

Abstract

Today’s cities are profound reflections of human achievements, activities, developments and prosperity. Yet, as evidenced by the climatic abnormalities, health problems, pollution, uneven allocation of resources, traffic congestion, loss of biodiversity and accumulation of waste within urban areas - cities tend to reflect an unwelcoming and unsustainable environment to live and prosper in. However, by familiarising ourselves with current tendencies, a profound solution on sustainable urban development can be achieved. The following paper seeks to contribute to the study of infrastructural development in the areas of waste management, transportation, green space allocation and land reclamation by analysing policy related documents of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the Republic of Singapore through case study analysis. In time of high urbanization volatility, the aim of this research is to develop an analysis into urban development in relation to sustainability for the region of Southeast Asia. As such, it analyses certain aspects of urban planning by looking into factors contributing to major changes and attributes in the sphere of extremely dense metropolises. The results of the analysis present a continuous necessity for responsible attitudes and careful considerations in a hope to find prominent solutions for protecting our environment for future generations.
