Abstract

Mangue Beat, eine künstlerische Bewegung mit sozialem Anspruch, entstand im nordost-brasilianischen Recife der anbrechenden 1990er Jahre als Antwort auf die dort vorherrschenden, miserablen sozioökonomischen Bedingungen. Durch eine Rückbesinnung auf die ungemeine Vielfalt und Diversität regionaler Musiktraditionen und deren Einbettung in einen globalen und modernen Kontext, vermochte es der Mangue Beat, dem kulturellen und gesellschaftlichen „Stillstand“ nachhaltig entgegen zu wirken und Recife in den Blickpunkt des nationalen, popularmusikalischen Interesses zu rücken. Neben einer ausführlichen Betrachtung der Entstehungsgeschichte des Mangue Beat und seiner wichtigsten Protagonisten, geht die vorliegende Arbeit auch der Frage nach, ob es sich dabei um ein spezifisches, musikalisches Genre oder eher um eine umfassende, künstlerische Bewegung handelt. Auf einer beigelegten DVD findet sich, neben einigen Interviews mit Künstlern der musikalischen Szene, auch ein kurzer, in der Nachbereitung einer dreiwöchigen Exkursion nach Recife (2010) entstandener, Film.
