Abstract

Objetivo: Descrever as características da meningite viral, a fim de diagnosticar e tratar os pacientes portadores dessa doença. Revisão bibliográfica: A meningite é definida como um processo inflamatório das membranas que recobrem o sistema nervoso central (SNC). A sintomatologia é bastante variável, mas destaca-se clinicamente por cefaleia, rigidez na nuca, febre, fotofobia e mialgia. Em relação à etiologia, os enterovírus são responsáveis pela maioria dos casos, porém também pode ser pelos micro-organismos do herpes simples (HSV-1 e HSV-2) e varicela zoster (VZV). Considerações finais: A meningite viral constitui a maioria dos casos de infecção viral do SNC e representa uma emergência médica. É diagnosticada através da punção liquórica com PCR para pesquisa de DNA ou RNA viral, embora os sinais clínicos clássicos: rigidez de nuca, sinal de Kernig e sinal de Brudzinski possam auxiliar no diagnóstico e aumentar a indicação para a realização da punção. Por se tratar de uma doença autolimitada, seu tratamento está voltado para o suporte do paciente, embora, em alguns casos, os antivirais possam ser administrados. Dessa forma, é essencial a atenção ao paciente com meningite viral a fim de propiciar adequado diagnóstico e tratamento evitando, assim, desfechos desfavoráveis.
