Tendo-se em vista todas as consequencias da aterosclerose, estao sendo enviados esforcos intensivos para desenvolver meios de reducao dos indices de incidencia, ja que esses meios se deparam diretamente envolvidos com os programas de prevencao primaria, cujo objetivo e retardar a formacao do ateroma ou induzir regressao das lesoes. A proposta desse capitulo foi discutir a fisiopatologia da aterosclerose, bem como suas possiveis causas, tratamentos e seus problemas relacionados.
