ABSTRACT Measurement-While-Drilling (MWD) is an important new technology for transmitting data from the bottom of a borehole to the surface without a wireline. The biggest application now is for directional drilling where MWD virtually eliminates downtime for directional surveys. The Teleco MWD system is the first to be used extensively in the Gulf of Mexico. In this paper we discuss our field experience in the Gulf of Mexico and the methods and standards that evolved with the introduction of this new technology. We also present an analysis of direct time savings based on data from 31 MWD-surveyed and 31 conventionally-surveyed wells and we use case examples to illustrate other benefits of the MWD system.
