The patient was a 22-year-old male physical therapy student whose tutor suspected the absence of the lower portion of the left trapezius muscle. During left lower trapezius manual muscle testing, it was noted that he was unable to achieve satisfactory control of the left scapula and the left lower trapezius was visibly and palpably absent compared to the right side.
