GPS Based Child Tracking System

Abstract

Over the past few years, various companies around the world have been grappling with the question “What to do with Location Information”. Advancements in both network based and GPS based positioning have resulted in greater accuracy and falling prices of chipsets. This has paved the way for new applications that use the position information to provide consumers with applications that enhance safety, provide location specific information and make life more convenient. This paper presents the Child Tracking System project currently ongoing at Wipro Technologies, Bangalore in association with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. The system enables parents to track their child and consists of three main subsystems: a GPS based positioning and communication device (called geo-device) that can be fitted on to a child’s schoolbag or belt, a position-server and an AGPS assistance server. The geo-device contains three major components: an AGPS module, a microcontroller and a GPRS module. The geo-device determines the current position of the child using AGPS technology. It periodically connects to the assistance-server through the GPRS network and the Internet and fetches network-assistance data. This data is fed to t he AGPS module, which allows it to track position rapidly and in low signal-strength environments. The geodevice sends the position information to the position-server. The position-server stores the updates sent by different geo-devices, in a database. The parent can log on to the positionserver over the Internet using a PC, PDA or mobile phone and see the child’s current location and route taken over the last few hours, on a map. Apart from the position information database, the position-server stores several other databases that implement various functions like alert areas, programmed areas, authentication etc. A key challenge in the design of the child tracking system is the implementation of AGPS support using an assistance server so that the system can be deployed in areas where there is no AGPS network support. The system makes it simple and easy for a parent to safely monitor their school going children. The service is attractive for an application service provider due to the large number of tracking opportunities and low cost of service setup.
