Aerodynamic Measurements of the 777 Main Landing Gear Model

Abstract

*† ‡ § . Aerodynamic measurements were taken over two models (13% and 26%) of the 777 high fidelity isolated main landing gear in the 6- by 6-foot Virginia Tech Stability Wind Tunnel (VT-SWT) at a free-stream Mach number of 0.16. Digital Particle Image Velocimetry measurements discussed in this paper are acquired at four locations over the 13% model of the landing gear with no gear door and a truck angle of zero degrees. Flow over the wheels at a Reynolds number based on wheel diameter of 650,000 is investigated and compared with results obtained previously at NASA Langley. Contour plots of average velocity and mean vorticity and vortex visualization are presented for the flow between the braces. Results from flow visualization using tuft over the 26% fully dressed high fidelity landing gear with a truck angle of 13 degrees and a gear door are also presented. Analysis of the captured videos is performed by differentiating the tuft motion into three different categories; namely low, medium and high turbulence, while the direction of the local flow is also indicated. Flow over individual elements of the landing gear is explained in detail and a comprehensive view of the gear depicting the flow interactions over the gear elements is also presented.
