Bit error rate performance of coded 8PSK

Abstract

This paper presents the coded BERs of low-sideband (LSB)-coded 8PSK and a semianalytic technique for computing the BERs of LSB-encoded 8PSK. The uncoded MSB, 2SB, and LSB BERs are presented, and then LSB error-correction coding is applied, and the BERs of the coded MSB, 2SB, and LSB are found. The performance of four error-correction codes are specifically considered: the RS (255,239) code shortened to (64,48); the RS (63,43) code shortened to (60,40); the BCH (255,230) code; and the BCH (63,44) code shortened to (57,38). Of these particular codes, the RS (60,40) code offers the best performance, but the BCH (57,38) code is within 1 dB of the RS (60,40) code and offers a simpler encoding and decoding procedure that is significant at Gbps data rates. A semianalytic technique for computing the BER performance of LSB-coded 8PSK in an arbitrary one-hop communication link is also presented. (Author)
