Abstract

Enfermedadperiodontal. Disfunción endotelial. Summary: Recent studies addressing cardiovascular risk factorssuggest a relationship between periodontal disease and the development of atherosclerosis. Aprobable mechanism of this link is the alteration of the endothelial function by the systemicinflammatory state related to periodontal disease. The endothelial dysfunction in patients withperiodontal disease has been exposed in several cross-sectional epidemiological studies and somerecent studies of periodontal intervention (clinical trials). The impact of the periodontaltreatment in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases has to be clarified in future and biggerclinical trials. Nevertheless, the possibility that the periodontal treatment diminishescardiovascular morbimortality may have an important impact in public health policies, sincecardiovascular diseases are the first cause of mortality in Colombia and many other countries. Theaim of this paper is to identify the main physiopathological relationships between periodontitis andcardiovascular disease. Key words: Cardiovascular disease. Aetiology. Prevention. Periodontaldisease. Endothelial dysfunction.
