
En el año de 1908 se publicaron los dos primeros casos sobre paracoccidioidomicosis y desde entonces se ha considerado esta micosis como la más frecuentemente encontrada en los países sudamericanos; particularmente en Brasil, Venezuela y Colombia. Es la única enfermedad micótica geográficamente limitada a América Latina y a pesar de que su historia se conoce hace más de 63 años, sin embargo, su importancia dentro de los programas de salud en América Latina solamente ha sido reconocida en los últimos diez años.
