Abstract

José dos Santos Libório foi um dos principais agentes do mercado de arte português durante as duas últimas décadas de Oitocentos, tendo sido responsável pela organização de alguns dos mais icónicos leilões do seu tempo. No segundo decénio do século XX mudar-se-ia para o Rio de Janeiro, onde viria a notabilizar-se como um reputado antiquário cujas exposições comerciais atrairiam os principais colecionadores brasileiros. Este artigo constitui a primeira abordagem especificamente focada neste fascinante agente. Como tal, o principal objetivo consiste em analisar a atividade profissional de Libório entre a criação da Empreza Liquidadora em Lisboa no ano de 1886 e a sua bem-sucedida incursão no mercado de arte brasileiro a partir de 1910. A investigação e análise de periódicos da época, bem como de publicações coevas, catálogos de exposições e algum material de arquivo, revelaram-se fundamentais para alcançar o objetivo traçado. No final, concluímos que estamos perante um agente económico absolutamente notável pelo seu dinamismo, perspicácia e arrojo, características que lhe permitiram diferenciar-se tanto em Lisboa como no Rio de Janeiro e, não menos importante, afirmar-se como um extraordinário elo de ligação entre dois mercados de arte.
