Abstract

La insuficiencia cardiaca (IC) es un grave problema de salud pública. Afecta a más de 20 millones de personas en el mundo y provoca un alto número de hospitalizaciones y elevados gastos en salud. El aumento de esta enfermedad en el mundo podría deberse a una mayor incidencia, una mayor supervivencia de los casos existentes o a ambos sucesos. Como es más común en los adultos mayores, su prevalencia seguirá ascendiendo conforme se incremente el envejecimiento de la población. Las proyecciones sugieren que la prevalencia se mantendrá en ascenso y se estima que habrá 8 millones de individuos con insuficiencia cardíaca (IC) en EE.UU. para 2030. Por estos motivos, es importante disponer de nuevas alternativas terapéuticas. En los últimos años han sido numerosos los intentos para hallar nuevas alternativas farmacológicas, pero pocos fármacos han demostraron ser efectivos en mejorar la supervivencia de los pacientes. Solo las terapias que inducen un bloqueo neurohormonal, como los inhibidores de la enzima convertidora de la angiotensina, los bloqueadores del receptor de la angiotensina II, el bloqueo de la aldosterona y los betabloqueantes, reducen la mortalidad. El objetivo del presente trabajo es identificar y describir las novedades terapéuticas más relevantes en relación con la IC en los últimos años.
