Abstract

La prevalencia global de la intolerancia a la glucosa entre adultos de 20 y 79 años se estima del 7.5%, siendo la resistencia a la insulina y la falla de la célula beta mecanismos fundamentales en la fisiopatología de la prediabetes. La mayoría de las personas pasan por una fase de prediabetes antes de desarrollar diabetes tipo 2; por lo cual, estrategias que nos permitan una búsqueda de los factores de riesgo harán posible identificar de manera temprana a aquellos individuos que requieren un tratamiento para prevenir el desarrollo de diabetes tipo 2. Las estrategias de cambios en estilo de vida son la primera línea de tratamiento en pacientes con riesgo de diabetes y han resultado eficaces en los estudios clínicos para reducir el riesgo de progresión a diabetes. Sin embargo, su implementación en la vida real es difícil de mantener a largo plazo, por lo que el tratamiento farmacológico para la pérdida de peso o el tratamiento hipoglucemiante podrían beneficiar a aquellos individuos considerados de muy alto riesgo; sobre todo cuando la hiperglucemia persiste a pesar de una estrategia de tratamiento no farmacológica.
