El monje matemático y el biólogo evolucionista

Abstract

Cuando se tratan los temas de genética en clase, muchos estudiantes de biología se encuentran con la sorpresa de que les piden resolver problemas en los que aparecen algunos cálculos y, desde luego, el empleo de probabilidades. Por su parte, la mayoría de los educadores en biología coinciden en que abordar problemas de genética es una manera sumamente instructiva de comprender a fondo la genética mendeliana. Al principio, los alumnos encuentran estos problemas muy complicados, pero a fuerza de trabajarlos se dan cuenta de que la mayoría son del mismo tipo y que el secreto para resolverlos está, más que en el manejo de las matemáticas, en la comprensión de las leyes de Mendel. Hasta aquí se ha hablado de matemáticas, de Mendel, de genética y su enseñanza; quizá, salvo el primero, el resto de los temas desconcierte a los lectores docentes de matemáticas. La intención de estos párrafos es todavía más aventurada, porque, ante todo, se pretende hablar de Charles Darwin, el genial naturalista inglés cuya idea de la evolución a través de la selección natural cambió radicalmente la biología y cuyo aniversario número 200 de nacimiento se celebró el 12 de febrero pasado en casi todo el mundo. Una vez hecha esta aclaración, el lector podrá sentirse todavía más confundido que al principio, al punto de que sin duda en este momento se preguntará: ¿qué tienen que ver Darwin, Mendel, la genética y las matemáticas? Intentaremos responderlo a continuación.
