SUMMARY Various methods of physical examination, together with examples of interpretation, illustrate the systematic steps necessary to arrive at an accurate diagnosis, without which initiation of appropriate steps to handle the disease or condition would be delayed or impossible. The importance of physical or clinical examination is emphasized; supplemental laboratory tests or diagnostic inoculations are valuable only when indicated or necessary. Though not specifically mentioned, an attempt has been made to demonstrate that the single most important aspect in dealing with a patient is establishment of the correct diagnosis at the initial visit or as soon thereafter as possible. Somewhat standard therapeutic or preventive measures, or both, may then logically be employed at the discretion and judgment of the individual clinician.
