Mastitis in Guinea Pigs

Abstract

SUMMARY Mastitis was observed in 2 guinea pigs from a colony. High leukocyte counts on milk samples were indicative of mammary irritation. Microscopically, there were wide variations in the inflammatory processes characterized by acute to subacute inflammatory changes in the lobules. An organism with the characteristics of α-hemolytic Streptococcus was isolated from milk and mammary tissue samples. High leukocyte counts on milk samples, bacterial isolation from milk and mammary tissues, and gross pathologic and histopathologic examination provided conclusive evidence for the diagnosis of mastitis in the 2 guinea pigs.
