"Buscar la vida" en Río de la Plata: Marcelino Callexas Sanz, 1757-1820 (Dossier)

Abstract

This article reconstructs the main landmarks of Marcelino Callexas Sanz' life (Baltanás, Castilla la Vieja, 1757-Buenos Aires, 1820) during his time in the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata (from 1780 until his death). The appeal of the case in relation to what's known by specialized historians lies in the fact that his mercantile adventure fails, and his life must be redefined outside the world of commerce. The information has been drawn from a private archive with correspondence, cash books, loose accounting papers, judicial and tax documentation. Together, these documents show the attempts of a young man arrived in the Río de la Plata to "make a life" in America through trade. He failed. And if there had not been a revolution, he would have finished his days as a notary in the porteño colonial Audiencia, as the heir of his father-in-law's position.
