This article is an account of the idea, the project and the execution of the most relevant public facility of Figueres (together with the Rambla) during the 19th and part of the 20th centuries. The significance of this building, excessive for such a small city, goes beyond the neoclassic building, as it conveys a new way of understanding public urbanism. Under the architect Josep Roca I Bros, part of the city’s land development required to open public spaces that were inexistent until then, breaking with the nature of medieval urbanism, characterized by its concentration around a core, in the case of Figueres being the Town Hall Square. The construction of the Main Theatre represents the start of the socialization of public space in Figueres. Also, the Main Theatre is ahead of its time, as it is contemporary with Barcelona’s Liceu Theatre or the Madrid’s Royal Theatre, for example, and 30 years ahead of Olot’sMain theatre, and a decade ahead of Girona’s.
