Què diu i què no diu la taula periòdica

Abstract

Des de la proposta de Mendeléiev l'any 1869, la taula periòdica ha consolidat plenament la seva vigència i ha esdevingut l'eix vertebrador de la química. Ara bé, la rellevància de la taula periòdica no implica que intrínsecament aporti informació química. Ben al contrari, la seva gran utilitat és funció directa dels coneixements previs que hom té, els quals, un cop organitzats i sistematitzats en el marc de la taula, permeten fer prediccions sobre les propietats, l'estructura i la reaccionabilitat dels elements químics i de llurs compostos. Atès que la taula periòdica és un tema cabdal en l'aprenentatge de la química, es fa una proposta sobre com es pot abordar llur presentació als alumnes que inicien el seu camí en aquesta disciplina.

Since Mendeleev’s proposal in 1869, the periodic table has fully consolidated its validity and has become the central axis of chemistry. However, the relevance of the periodic table does not require that it intrinsically provides chemical information. In fact, the usefulness of the periodic table is a direct function of previous chemical knowledge one has. Once this knowledge is organized and systematized within the framework of the periodic table, prediction of chemical behavior, and properties of the elements and their compounds becomes possible. As the periodic table is a main topic in the learning process of chemistry, a procedure for presenting it to students who take a chemistry course for the first time is reported here.
