El país asiático con mayor número de musulmanes, aunque a paso lento, está en continuo progreso social y económico, aun cuando es vulnerable a amenazas que van desde el terrorismo hasta desastres naturales —erupciones volcánicas, terremotos y tsunamis. Por tercera ocasión en 18 meses un devastador terremoto golpeó a Indonesia. Las más de 18 000 islas indonesas se extienden a lo largo del llamado Arillo de Fuego, compuesto por volcanes y fallas tectónicas del Pacífico. Los recientes desastres naturales son un recordatorio de los peligros que acechan a este país.
