Abstract

En 1992, la Región Administrativa Especial de Hong Kong (RAEHK) registró acontecimientos ambivalentes en cuanto a la evolución política, económica y social de este territorio de 1 071 km² y casi 7 millones de habitantes. Por lo que respecta a la vida política de la región, el primero de julio comenzó —coincidiendo con el quinto aniversario de la reintegración de Hong Kong, a la soberanía de China— el segundo periodo de Tung Cheehwa como jefe del gobierno local. La reelección de Tung se efectuó todavía dentro del periodo de transición, en el cual no se contempla ninguna posibilidad de votar directamente al jefe del Ejecutivo regional, por lo que la misma se fraguó dentro del comité ad hoc de selección, de 800 miembros, sin que se hubiera siquiera registrado ninguna otra candidatura, y ante el abierto apoyó de Beijing a favor del ex magnate naviero quien, por otra parte, alcanzó los niveles más bajos de popularidad local, desde que asumiera su cargo en julio de 1997.
