Abstract

ENGLISH ABSTRACT All in Together: Early Childhood Education and Care Centre Leaders’ Experiences with Establishing and Developing Professional Learning Communities This article explores early childhood education and care (ECEC) centre leaders’ experiences with establishing and developing professional learning communities (PLC) in their centres. The study develops from a government funded competence strategy (Rekomp) in which leadership in PLCs have been a central theme. Using focus groups as its methodological approach, this article contributes to the field with empirical research on what centre leaders in Norway emphasises when leading PLCs. Our findings show that centre leaders are particularly concerned with nurturing a united staff, establishing trust relationships among their staff, and maintain progress in their collective professional development. The article complements the limited knowledge base that exists in the Nordic ECEC context by providing insight into how PLCs could be a driving force as well as a challenge for centre leaders. Our results point the way for further inquiry and discussion about how PLCs can help to realise pedagogical aims through ECEC professional development from within.
