The introductory chapter frames the anthology's theme: pushing and transcending limits in sport. It shows how such boundary work takes multiple forms: Athletes extend human performance through risk-taking and technological innovation, while sport organisations transcend traditional boundaries via organisational innovations in events and competition formats. A central premise is that efforts to push and break limits generate new opportunities and dilemmas for athletes, coaches, and administrators. Drawing on sociological theories of risk, excitement, tension, and power, the chapter analyses these opportunities and dilemmas. The chapter concludes by outlining the anthology's empirical studies, which collectively examine how Norwegian sport negotiates ethical, social, and organisational challenges in the pursuit of pushing and transcending limits.
