In this chapter, we explore how children in marginalized positions, exemplified by children in public care and children with disabilities, create a sense of belonging, the conditions that enable belonging, and how the children make use of available opportunities. We highlight the material conditions, such as places, objects, and activities, in the shaping of children’s relationships and their sense of community with peers. This focus reveals the different ways belonging can be expressed. Places and objects may constrain and afford children’s ability to navigate between various positions. The perspectives discussed in this chapter may prove valuable for professionals in their efforts to foster participation and belonging in children’s daily lives, and especially in shared exploration of the opportunities and constraints that each child encounters.
