In 2019, a legal requirement was implemented mandating that anyone applying for promotion or a position involving teaching at a Norwegian university or college had to first complete a basic course in university pedagogy. The aim of this requirement is to strengthen the practical-pedagogical competence of university-level educators. In this chapter, the authors detail how the basic course is organized and conducted at the University of Agder. They then explore four factors regarding the course’s impact on teaching: (i) participants’ attitudes towards teaching, (ii) preparation for teaching, (iii) execution of teaching, and (iv) evaluation of teaching. The insights gained from this chapter are valuable as they shed light on the learning outcomes of such courses. Thus, the chapter makes an important empirical contribution to the debate on practical-pedagogical competence at Norwegian universities and colleges.
