The chapter explores the impact of parental incarceration on children and adolescents, focusing on their daily lives, coping strategies, and adult experiences. Drawing on qualitative, retrospective life-course interviews with young adults, it reveals both psychological and social effects of imprisonment on relationships post-release. Psychologically, incarceration can alter trust, intimacy, and a sense of security. Socially, it often brings stigma, community condemnation, and disruptions in familial relationships and cohesion. Children of incarcerated parents frequently face social and economic hardships, including a loss of status. Early assumption of adult roles can serve as both a burden and a form of protection. Support during transitions related to incarceration and following the parents’ release is often insufficient, leaving children without adequate assistance. The manner and timing of how children learn about the incarceration are more crucial than the actual timing of the imprisonment. Critical events such as arrests and trials may be perceived as intense but often remain unknown to the children. Family strategies for handling stigma and openness vary, and the transition to adulthood typically becomes a time for moral reflection, potentially leading to either reconciliation with or estrangement from the parent. Resilience in children of incarcerated parents involves a prolonged and complex process of identity formation, where they work to avoid being defined by their parents’ criminal actions. Although many manage to cope well, they often carry challenging experiences, leading to a persistent sense of inner disparity. Societal silence regarding criminal behavior further exacerbates this feeling.
