Les médaillons de Gniezno et les gants pontificaux dans l’archéologie funéraire

Abstract

Pendant les fouilles amateurs menées en 1934 par les chanoine Antoni Laubitz dans la cathédrale de Gniezno, ont mis au jour deux petits médaillons ronds en cuivre dorée, décorés d’émaux opaques cloisonnés. Ils représentés les apôtres saint Paul et saint Thomas, avec les inscriptions latines »S[Anctus] Paulus et S[ANCTUS] Thomas« adéquates. Ceux médaillons étaient trouvés dans deux tombes archiépiscopales anonymes, chacun à la hauteur de la poitrine du défunt, c’est nous fait à penser qu’il s’agit d’ornement des gants pontificaux. Les médaillons de Gniezno ont été disparus pendant la deuxième guerre mondiale. Les gants pontificaux ne ferra toujours partie des insignes pontificales. Ils font la nouveauté dans la liste des insignes épiscopale d’Ordo I – du Pontifical Romano – germanique de la moitié du Xe siècle. Confectioné en soie, ornées des manchettes et des médaillons brodées en fils d’or. Vers la fin du XIIe siècle apparaît la mode de décorer la partie extérieure des gants liturgiques par les petits médaillons ronds, décorés d’émaux opaques et translucides cloisonnés. Ces plaques ont été produits par les ateliers byzantines, mais existent aussi des pièces imitations, fabriqué par les ateliers italiennes, localisé soit à Venise soit en Sicile. La disparitions des médaillons de Gniezno a exclu précise leurs origines et leurs datation
