Abstract

<p style="text-align: justify;">Las complicaciones relacionadas con la diabetes afectan a muchos sistemas de órganos y son responsables de la mayoría de la morbilidad y mortalidad asociadas con la enfermedad. Sorprendentemente, la diabetes es la principal causa de ceguera en adultos, insuficiencia renal y amputación de extremidades inferiores no traumáticas. Los diagnósticos adversos relacionados con la diabetes en su mayoría no aparecen hasta veinte años después de la hiperglucemia. Debido a que la diabetes mellitus (DM) tipo 2 a menudo tiene un largo período asintomático de hiperglucemia antes del diagnóstico, muchas personas con DM tipo 2 tienen complicaciones en el momento del diagnóstico. Afortunadamente, muchas de las complicaciones relacionadas con la diabetes se pueden prevenir o retrasar con la detección temprana, el control glucémico agresivo y los esfuerzos para minimizar los riesgos de complicaciones. Los problemas relacionados con la diabetes se pueden fragmentar en complicaciones vasculares y no vasculares y son similares para la DM tipo 1 y tipo 2. Las complicaciones vasculares de la DM se subdividen en microvasculares (retinopatía, neuropatía, nefropatía) y complicaciones macrovasculares (cardiopatía coronaria, arteriopatía periférica, enfermedad cerebrovascular). Las complicaciones microvasculares son específicas de la diabetes, mientras que las complicaciones macrovasculares son similares a las de los no diabéticos, pero surgen con mucha más ocurrencia en personas con diabetes. Las complicaciones no vasculares incluyen gastroparesia, infecciones, cambios en la piel y pérdida auditiva. No está claro si la DM tipo 2 aumenta el riesgo de demencia o deterioro de la función cognitiva.</p>
