EnglishLawrence Alma-Tadema (1836-1912) has been one of the most representative Victorian painters, born in Holland but later settled in London. Initially he specialized in medieval history paintings but soon discovered his true inspiration during his frequent trips to Italy, mainly to Rome and Pompey, adapting his artistic production to suit the moment with genre scenes set in antique frames during the decline of the Roman Empire. Through the scenes of his paintings, the observer could discover his passion for history and his archaeological knowledge, transporting the beholder to lavish interiors such as his representations of the Roman baths, with various types of marble, beautifully veined, combined with exotic stones, and stunning mosaics. His precise knowledge with regards to the furniture and utensils related to the widespread practice of the baths were also reflected in his work. Contemplating his paintings one can experience the splendor of these places where the Romans enjoyed one of their favorite practices. Through his paintings one can dive into the different sections of these famous baths: the apoditerium, or the tepidarium or its surroundings, the exedras, which became a meeting place for before and after bathing, or the tabernae, where one may see the social nature of Roman ritual baths, which lasted several hours and included not only the bathing aspect, but also exercise, relax, business and a space for social life in full swing.
