Balneoterapia e hidroterapia en la esclerosis múltiple

Abstract

La Esclerosis Multiple (EM) es una enfermedad autoinmune, inflamatoria cronica progresiva que destruye la vaina de mielina de las neuronas del cerebro y de la medula espinal, apareciendo placas escleroticas que impiden el funcionamiento normal de la fibra nerviosa afectada, disminuyendo o deteniendo los impulsos nerviosos. Se calcula que actualmente hay alrededor de 46.000 personas con esclerosis multiple en Espana, aproximadamente un 50 por ciento mas de las que habia hace 20 anos. La relacion hombre mujer es de 1/3. Desde antiguo se conoce el efecto perjudicial de la temperatura en los enfermos de EM. En el ano 2000 Kohlmejer et al. publican en Am J Forensic Med Pathol un caso fatal de hipertermia en un enfermo de 47 anos con historia de EM encontrado muerto en el bano a una temperatura de 41 oC. Fue el Profesor Wilhelm Uhthoff quien describio por primera vez, en 1890, que el aumento de la temperatura corporal por el esfuerzo fisico puede llevar a un deterioro transitorio de la vision en pacientes con EM debido a la neuritis optica retrobulbar, mas tarde llamado "fenomeno Uhthoff". Hasta 1983 "la prueba de bano caliente" fue aceptada como prueba clinica para el diagnostico de la EM, posteriormente reemplazada por investigaciones mas especificas
